You Might Be a Hypocrite If…

I was asked recently what a hypocrite is. The dictionary describes a hypocrite as someone who “pretends to be more virtuous or religious  than he really is.” Or in simpler terms, a hypocrite is someone who says one thing and does the opposite. I’m far from being a perfect person, but I don’t ever want to be a hypocrite.

You might be a hypocrite …

  • If you expect God to forgive you, but refuse to forgive others.
  • If you’re disgusted by the moral filth that is playing on your own VCR or DVD player.
  • If you complain about being poor on Twitter or Facebook via your smartphone.
  • If you have a “save the planet” bumper sticker on your Hummer.
  • If you complain about welfare cheats, but in-turn cheat on your taxes.
  • If you point out what is wrong in other’s lives, but never notice what’s wrong in your own life.
  • If you can drop the F-bomb on Facebook, and then turn around on your next status and talk about praying to God.
  • If you call yourself a Christian but hate homosexuals, people of different races and those who disagree with you.
  • If “do unto others” only applies to others.
  • If you can go to church on Sunday and thank God for His grace, and then at lunch be unkind or rude to your waiter or waitress.

Said in “Jeff Foxworthy” voice: If you can still see the speck in your neighbors eye while a crane is propping up the board in your own eye…you might be a hypocrite.

  2. Debbie Thomas says:

Thanks for that…..I can see I need to improve on a few things. One problem that I can’t seem to over come is that I freely see OTHER PEOPLE as hypocrites……then I think, well, THAT’S HYPOCRITICAL!!

  3. John says:

My name is John and I am a hypocrite…Thanks for the blog post and the reminder that I still have several planks to remove from my eye. Maybe we should start a 12 Step group.

  4. John Shepard says:

Or if you run in the morning, and follow up your run with a donut?

  5. Kyle Parker says:

Good post. That last one really hit me. I waited tables before, so I try to b very courteous and friendly to the wait staff. I hat it when I am out on Sunday and the large, obnoxious group next to me leaves a tract and a small tip. I have often left more money on my table before to help cover for those people.

It reminds me of the old adage “be the change you want to see in others.”

Sometimes my planks get in the way.

  7. Hipocracy says:

[…] of hipocracy as their theme.  A couple that stood out to me included Trey Morgan’s post You Might Be a Hipocrite If… and Jessica Ahlquist’s post A Crown of Thorns with […]

  8. Not sure if I fully agree, but I love the article :)

  9. Lura says:

an excuse often given for not attending worship is that the church is full of hypocrites. There is an old saying that goes something like this, “what is worse spending time sitting in a pew next to hypocrites or spending eternity in hell without them”. Probably didn’t get that exactly right.

The church is full of saints who still sin and continually repent and try to do better. A hypocrite is a sinner who thinks he is a saint who does no wrong.

  10. Tim Archer says:

I think it was Paul Faulkner who once said that a hypocrite is someone who wants to be appear to be something that he has no intention of being.

    Grace and peace,

It was hard NOT to be judgemental recently when I saw a young woman in a long beautiful dress that was cut like a night gown. It was very low cut and she was wearing a big wooden CROSS necklace that hung down to the cleavage. There just seemed to be something wrong with that picture. I guess we all look like that way sometimes in one way or another. People who shout angry words, use crude language, gossip, criticize, make unkind jokes at another’s expense. Do you know what I am saying?

  12. Jess says:

Where would we be if God didn’t forgive us hypocritical sinners?

  13. Truthseeker says:

You might be a hypocrite if…..

… brag to others about how your dad is the most Godly man you know, and such a great influence on you, and then you have nothing to do with your own children.

… are a “spiritual leader” and you encourage your own children to divorce or separate from their spouses (and children)

….you have a “Christian” blog, and you don’t even speak to your spouse and children.

  14. vanilla says:

Good reminder that I need to walk the walk I talk.

Love the part about the smart-phone! Great blog.
