We Gave Away a House

Giving away houses … that’s amazing. I have been honored to be a part of Childress’ very own Extreme Home Makeover. In just over four months the community of Childress has taken a house that was to be demolished and totally renovated it. There were so many different people who worked on this project.  I’m thankful for John, Randy and Amber’s dream to make this happen. It was John & Randy that said, “If we can build houses in Honduras, we can build them in Childress too.” They were the drive that made this all happen.

Although it’s been four months, it seems like just yesterday I was having this conversation with a sweet lady from our community …

ME: “Did you know that we’re in the process of buying an old home, totally redoing everything in it, and then giving it away to someone in our community that needs one and can’t afford one?”

VICKIE: “Wow, that is so nice. What can I do to help?”

ME: “Well, we do need your help … we want you to be the recipient of the house.”

VICKIE: “What do you mean?”

ME: “We want to give the house to you?”

VICKIE (after covering her mouth with her hands): “Oh, no. Why me? I’m not worthy.”

It took some convincing, but Vickie finally excepted. Yesterday we handed her the keys and said, “It’s yours.  Enjoy.” It was an emotional day yesterday.  Here are a few pictures from yesterday, and here’s a story that KVII Channel 7 News out of Amarillo did.

The house was completely furnished by the kind people of Childress. As you can see by Vickie hugging the washer and dryer, they were her favorite. She's never owned her own washer and dryer.

A big crowd turned out yesterday for the open house and key giveaway.

Vickie being interviewed by KVII out of Amarillo. I appreciate them coming. We invited all the news stations from Amarillo down. They were the only ones interested in the story.

The house at the beginning. I thought as I took this picture, "What are we getting ourselves into?"

The finished product.

The Augment Team. Thank you John, Amber & Randy ... you guys are my heroes.

I love mission trips, and plan on going on one again this year, but I really love what happens when people do mission work in their own hometowns… :0)
