• HAITI: Just some perspective on what has happened in Haiti. The death toll of hurricane Katrina was around 1300. The death toll from the 9/11 attacks were around 6000, and the Haiti death toll (estimate at this time) is 50,000 people. The pictures (warning: graphic) coming out of Haiti are heartbreaking. I would love to jump on an airplane and go help, but I can’t and neither can you. BUT there are two things we can do… PRAY for the people, the country and the workers. And we can GIVE some of our money. There are a lot of ways to give. I gave a $10 donation yesterday, simply by texting the Red Cross on my phone. Just text the word “Haiti” to 90999, and it will add a $10 charge to your next month’s cellular bill, giving the donation to Haiti relief. You may be thinking, “But that’s only $10.” Yesterday alone, over half a million people gave $10 through texting and raised over 5 million dollars. If you are looking for other ways to donate, my friend John Dobbs has some excellent links to other organizations.

  • SPANISH CLASS: I’m going back to school … yip, I’m starting a Spanish class this Sunday evening and I’m SO pumped about it. I’ve always wanted to learn some Spanish, but after a couple of trips to Honduras, I realize I NEED to be able to communicate. I’m really tired of having to ask people, “How do you say….,” when I’m in Honduras. Sadly, I’ve got a lot to learn. I really know nothing about Spanish. Hopefully I’ll pick it up quickly.
Hasta Luego (just in case you didn’t know, that means “See you later”) ha

I just love the last picture. It breaks my heart to see all the awful damage, and I'm with you, Trey, I want to get on the next plane.

Yo estoy bailando con Lady Gaga. This was one of the first phrases I learned in Spanish.

trey~those pictures are…how do you describe them? Horrible? Touching…humbling?

Anyway~I read a lot of the comments that said, "Where was God?", "Did he cause this?", "don't pray…it's worthless", "stop the praying and do something that will actually help." That mortified me.

What is your response to people who ask those kinds of questions? I've been thinking of what I would say in response…and I'm not sure…

    Janet …

This breaks God's heart more than it does ours. As for people's comments, I'd agree with part of it. For example we need an action oriented Christianity, while praying is a must that's NOT all we should do. We must not be content with action-less Christianity. Too many will only pray and not look for ways to get involved. Right now the ONLY way to get involved is financially, even if it's a small amount. The outside world's comments can be cruel, but often soul-searching, meaning why are they saying what they are saying … possibly because in the past they've seen Christians only get involved with their words.

You probably have this figured out already, but f.y.i.: our capacity to acquire language takes a nose dive starting at about age 30. But it can be done. I started with biblical Hebrew at age 36. Best wishes.

Thank you … I'll follow up.

Very interesting about taking a Spanish class. I'm also very interested in learning Spanish for ministry purposes and mission trips. I've studied both Greek and Hebrew excessively and all I can say about languages is submerge yourself into it. Practice it every day.

  • He was pretty tough to listen to as well.
  • As crazy as it might sound, Chris Collinsworth just might be worse to listen to than the song Christmas Shoes.
  • Please remember that some Christmas music is incredibly offensive to people with grandmothers who actually were run over by reindeer.
  • Unfortunately, not a great night for "bobcats." :)
  • Chin up Childress Bobcats. We couldn't be prouder. Great fight tonight.
