Long before Teri Hatcher, Eva Longoria and the girls of Wisteria Lane was this lady. She was the first desperate housewife. The bible doesn’t tell us her name, just that she was Potiphar’s wife. When she laid eyes on Joseph (not the pool boy, but a servant in Potiphar’s house) she saw a young man who was handsome from head to toe.

She grabbed him by the hand and said, “Come to bed with me.” What red-blooded man wouldn’t these days? She was the bosses wife, and she had the hots for him.

But Joseph was not your typical red-blooded man … he was a man of God so he refused her advances. The bible tells us that “…she kept putting pressure on Joseph day after day, but he refused to sleep with her, and so he wouldn’t even go around her.”

“One day, however, no one else was around when Joseph went in to do his work. She came and grabbed him by his cloak demanding, “Come on, sleep with me!” Joseph tore himself away, leaving his cloak in her hand as he ran from the house.”

What an amazing story! Now there’s a hero for you. Despite the pressure, Joseph chose to do what was right. I think the story of Joseph teaches three ways to overcome any kind of temptation (especially sexual temptation) …

  • Joseph flat refused. He didn’t debate the pros and cons of having sex with her. He simply said, “No way!” Next time Satan throws some temptation at you that looks good, don’t debate it … just refuse.

  • Joseph steered clear of the temptation. Why go around something that tempts you? Instead, simply steer clear of whatever it is that’s tempting you. Whether it’s the adult movie channel, the computer, magazine subscription or a person … whatever your temptation is … steer clear of it!
  • Joseph ran. Sometimes it’s best to just run. Don’t worry if it seems rude or unkind… just RUN!

Samson was the strongest man in the Bible; Solomon was the wisest man in the Bible; and David was the one called “a man after God’s own heart, but all three of them struggled with sexual temptation AND LOST. Don’t fall for the desperate housewife. Be a Joseph!

Perhaps we should conduct a “Joseph 101 Class” for all men in our respective churches.

It would be a cool ministry tool to make modern day sit-coms from Bible stories….

I wish I could have Joseph’s delimma (I guess) I can’t run, I’m an old used up senior. Satan tempts me with feeling dispondent, old, lonely, no use to any one. Feeling sorry for myself. There are lots of kinds of temptations out there. I sure don’t want to end up in prison or hell. I just get tired of life some times. Write blogs that get the lonely back on track, there are lots of them out there. Young and old. Thank you.

    I tried leaving this B4–but I think I deleted it–here goes nothin')

So I preached this sermon once called "Desperate Housewives!" on the sexual tension between Leah & Rachel and the disappointment Jacob and his wives experienced in their marriage disaster. I included a disclaimer that I had never seen the show but that I had read the Bible, and it seemed like an apt description of what I read in the text of Genesis.

The elders didn't like it, because as one of them tried to explain, a lot of the members do watch the show and they know it's a cesspool of sleaze. So, I was criticized by the elders for the poor TV viewing habits of the flock. I thought that was an interesting approach to dealing with a problem in the pew… :-) [One of the elders said he was hoping that it was a misprint and that I actually intended to write "DISPARATE Housewives." But I hate using words in sermon titles that I have to look up in the dictionary, so his hopes were dashed.]

Good stuff, Trey! I always like your stuff.

    Awesome Trey.

I particularly like the advice: “Next time Satan throws some temptation at you that looks good, don’t debate it … just refuse.”

    Keep preaching brother!

Thanks, Trey–thankfully, I preach somewhere else now and work with elders who aren't fearful & "jumpy."
