SUPER BOWL SUNDAY

  • WORTHLESS TRIVIA: Do you know who the only person is to play in both the World Series and the Super Bowl? (Hint: He played in the 90’s)
  • Does your church change the time of its services on Super Bowl Sunday so you can watch it? Got any feelings on this?
  • My heart says the Giants, but my head says the Patriots. (Pats 31 and Giants 21) What’s your pick?

“Prime Time, Prime Time, Prime Time”

nope, won’t happen here. but we live in the Eastern time zone. kickoff is 6:30. Our monthly first sunday singing starts at 6 and ends around 7:15, after some visiting we still get to watch a lot of the game.

    I will call an upset
    Giants 41–Pats 37

  2. "Uncle" Roy says:

I have gone to some churches that would not change the time of the evening service if the roof caved in if it was Super Bowl Sunday, just to make a statement. As for as predictions, I’m pulling for the Giants (well, actually against the Pats), but I’m afraid the Giants don’t stand a chance. They’re not even the best team in the NFC. They ended the season and the playoffs with what Dandy Don Meredith used to call “Big Mo” as in “Momentum.” If the Super Bowl had been played one week ago, maybe a long shot, but with a two week layoff, plus all the distractions surrounding the Super Bowl, the Giants can’t compete. Patriots 38, Giants 13

  3. Alan Gable says:

    Brian’s right. Neon Deion.

The Patriots are perfect. The Giants’ pass rushers won’t have enough time to get to Brady because Wes Welker will be open all stinkin day. Eli is still Eli.
Pats 45-Giants 17. (One TD shy of the greatest SuperBowl performance in history – 1992 Dallas Cowboys)

  4. RAN says:

No, we don’t change the time of our services, but our evening services begin at 5:00. However, the funny thing is that one of the women called a meeting Sunday night after services. My husband just shook his head and said…..”only a woman would set a meeting on THAT Sunday night”.

Love to hear how you TX folks talk about the Cowboys! Deion was and still is a BIG deal. Since leaving TX, we don’t get near enough Cowboy info. MO folks just like to talk about that silly little team in STL…..that never does very much!

  5. Larissa says:

aha! I figured it out…I thought your church sounded familiar…I went to school with Nate and Kristen. Nate’s mother and my mother were college roommates. Anyways…they’re sweet people!

No problem with changing times unless Superbowl is more important than God. I’m rooting for the Patriots. But my pick usually loses. Does that scare you? gmj

  7. Soren says:

Oh yeah, Prime Time. I was going to guess Bo Jackson. D’oh!

We don’t have Sunday evening services where I preach. But at my former church, we had the service on Super Bowl Sunday. But we usually were home by the end of the first quarter. OUr Youth have a big Super Bowl Bash (instead of their regular youth meeting).

I want to see the Giants win, but they have their work cut out for them.

  8. mmlace says:

We don’t change the time of the evening service. There is an evening devotional at the normal time, for those who do not have the opportunity to attend in the morning, or for those who would just like to attend.

Most of the congregation, however, is being encouraged to meet in their life groups for…fellowship.

  9. cdj says:

Our church is having Sunday school Super Bowl parties, so you get the best of both worlds. Those who wouldn’t come to church Sunday evening because of the Super bowl anyway can now have both F’s…fellowship and football…Sunday night. I like the compromise and I like getting together in fellowship. How are you feeling, Trey?

  10. Philip Murphy says:

First, let’s discuss the importance of attending Sunday night services… it’s tradition stemming from the Industrial Revolution… turned into law… and now it’s on the CoC heaven punch list.

I applaud churches that provide fellowship time during the Super Bowl. Let’s give preachers a night off.

  11. TREY MORGAN says:

Charla – Let me put it this way, I asked Lea to get all the guns out of the house this afternoon :)

Looks like I’ll miss my first Fighting Childress Bobcat basketball game tonight. I’m just hoping to be up for preaching Sunday.

    Thanks for asking…

  12. Lightening says:

My dad was once a youth pastor in a church where the senior pastor was from the US and would have this HUGE superbowl party at his home. No idea what time it is played but it worked out to be afternoon here so we’d spend the morning at church and then go to his place. If it weren’t for that, not sure I’d even know what a superbowl was. :)

  13. Zach says:

Super Bowl— Good excuse to not have church on Sunday night… NICE… Patriots will win it again!!

  14. preacherman says:

    Patriots 27- New Yok – 13

  15. Bob Bliss says:

Trey, our services are at 5:00PM so no conflict. Game will be over by half time, Pats all the way.

Another trivia question – who is the only man to have a super bowl ring and an Olympic Gold Medal?

  16. Brandon says:

The answer to your question is Dion Sanders? I could care less about the superbowl game!

    Hope you’re feeling better!

  18. Brandon says:

Trey what do you think of the new site I designed?

  19. David Kirk says:

Our church has “potluck” lunch on Super Bowl Sunday, and on potluck day we don’t have an evening service, so it works out nicely. I hope you are feeling better.

  20. TREY MORGAN says:

    Bob – I don’t have a guess. What’s the answer?

    NB – Thanks

    Robert – Well said.

  21. Greg says:

There is a football game Sunday??

  22. Haley says:

    Pats – 37, Giants -28

I’ve been working on my prediction for the last few days and had to get it in before the game stared!

  23. Bob Bliss says:

Trey, Bob Hayes won 2 gold medals in the 1964 Olympics in the 100m and the 4X100m relay while a student at Florida A&M. Then he won the Super Bowl with the Cowboys in 1971.

  24. Timbra Wiist Owner/Photographer says:

to the one who said “only a woman would call a meeting. . .” i’ll have you know that a MAN originally wanted to have a congregational meeting this week (announced a few weeks ago) and a WOMAN asked, “isn’t that super bowl sunday? just wondering? cuz if you want people to come, you might want to choose a different weekend!” and I say. . . change the time, God didn’t set it. . . “making a point” just gets so ridiculous sometimes!

  25. jel says:

I think the Giants will win by 3 points 😉

  26. blogprophet says:

    woo-hoo!!

right winner, wrong score. don’t care

    WOOOO-HOOOOOO!!!!!!!!

  • it's still early. :)
  • no worries. Luke is a very popular gospel during the Christmas season. 😜 #BabyJesusStory
  • Mitch Moreland has a combined 1.6 WAR since the start of 2011 at a premium position (DH/1B). That position needs to produce.
  • definitely don't disagree with that. We will miss his glove. But he had such a quiet bat for someone at first base.
  • I only disliked him when he was at the plate.
