I’ve always believed that confession was not for God’s purpose but for our own. God already knows everything I’ve done. I’m not going to surprise Him by confessing something He doesn’t know. Confession has to be for the purpose of reminding me just how much I need God. It reminds me that I am a sinner. It reminds me that I’m forgiven. It also reminds me that God is a good God.
God then says excitedly, “I forgive you, Trey.”
I say, “But God I didn’t even get out what I was trying to tell you. I’m having a hard time
getting this out, and You jumped in there a little early. I was trying to tell you that I’m a … I am a …”
God cuts in and says eagerly, “Yes Trey, you’re forgiven.”
“Father,” I say, “Can I finish, please? I need to tell you that I’m a …”
God says with delight in His voice, “Trey, I forgive you!”
“But God,” I say, “I didn’t even get a chance to finish. Please, let me finish.”
God says, “Okay, go ahead.”
So I say, “Father, Father, I’m a … I’m a …. sinner. I have sinned.”
God says, “Trey, I already knew that and I already forgave you.”
With relief in my voice I say, “Father, you are SO good to me. Thank you Father.”
God says, “Anytime Trey. You are MORE than welcome. Just don’t ever forget that I delight in showing mercy.”
I am a Christian husband and father, who moonlights as the minister for the church of Christ in Childress, Texas. My wife Lea and I have been married for 23 years. We are doing our best to raise our 4 boys, who are all growing up way too fast.
When you talk to a close friend, you might chit-chat for a few minutes, but then it usually gets down to matters of the heart.
I believe the same is true with God.
Further, I believe that confession between believers is a lost and beautiful discipline. To be able to be Christ for one another… to verbalize and incarnate the forgiveness of God to our brothers and sisters… to be able to receive such grace is a practice that I encourage among my local family.

I think that Psalm 32 definitely shows that confession is for us, not for God. We need to tell Him, partly because we need to tell ourselves as well.

Confession is vital because God opposes the proud, and gives His grace to the humble.
I think we are so often cloud by the thoughts of Satan and that we start thinking that God can’t forgive this, He makes you think you have gone over you limit of confession, and you feel helpless and don’t realize that the Wonderful, Almighty God is right there, all you have to do is look and believe that he truly delights on his mercy. Its just like the story of the lost son that comes back to his father after he has spent his inheritance and Father takes him in with open arms and show mercy with such delight he sets up a banquet for his son’s return.

I started to tear up on this one Trey. I love reading about God’s mercy, and I think we all need reminded of that constantly. The devil spends a lot of time beating us down and making us feel like it’s a chore for God to forgive us, but this post has shut the devil up!
