Greg ... knowing your history as a past ref, I was hoping you comment.

I had a chance to ref a flag football game this summer with 6 - 9 year olds. During one of the games a team who had yet to lose that season had a call go against them ... I saw the play clearly that took place 5 foot in front of me. After it was over I had an angry parent (of a 6 year old) followed me to the car wondering why I hadn't called clipping on that play. I explained, "It’s simple, because it wasn't a clipping." The guy went ballistic!

Pretty sad!

I came back to revisit the comments and agree with Odgie ... when I officiated basketball, the very worst schools were more often than not the "Christian" schools. Don't know about the college level as I only worked a couple of games on that level before moving away from Alabama to Florida.

I hate to say it, but i'm afraid that many Christian parents learn this behavior at Christian colleges. I couldn't believe how quickly believers will abandon any biblical teachings on behavior over an intermural game. In this area, we need to lead by example.

Used to go to two church members' high school basketball games. I didn't scream, but when the boys did something good, I would yell, "Yahoo!" (This was up north.) To this day (20 years later) the boys thank us for supporting their team. Some of their teammaters would ask if the preacher and his wife were coming to the game. We had fun, the boys had fun, the refs mostly did a good job, and it was enjoyable. Sorry things have gotten out of hand in some areas.

My thoughts on this subject are posted at http://tinyurl.com/5obgov. I probably wasn't quite as harsh as you...I spread the love (ahem....blame) around to everyone involved.

Incidentally, hubby wanted to watch a jv rematch against Floydada tonight. The previous matchup saw a player leave the court on a stretcher to be loaded into an ambulance. Yes, parents need to grow up, yet refs need to remember that they are paid to actually control the game, not let it turn into female mud wrestling.

Hope the Childress -Friona matchup is a safe one. Drive safe, too.

I've been to games of different kinds where the fans were so rude I wanted to get up and leave. I hate confrontations. I went to a game once that I looked around at everyone screaming and mad and couldn't see anything but Romans rooting for the lions. Christians most of all should know better how to act. Good blog and good comments. If some of us can do better maybe others MIGHT see how to act. Do and be good Parker and Daddy. gmj

They have just recently brought back little dribblers basketball here because they couldn't have it because of all of the parents immature antics. And in little dribblers and little league, the coaches and refs are voluntary, so the ones that are yelling the loudest and acting the worst wouldn't dare volunteer to help out. They just like to sit in the stands and criticize the others who are giving up their free time to help all of these youngsters. It's not an easy job either to coach this little people.

I will never forget at one allstar baseball game when my son was about 10 or 11 and was the hind catcher. The backup hind catcher's mother sat right behind the catcher and said awful things to him and he was so rattled by that, he asked to come out of the game. I think the coach finally had the ref to make her stop, but why would you do that to a 10 year old? I think it's just stupidity!!!

Trey, I remember when coaching T-ball, 5 and 6 year olds, I had to actually ask the parents to "chill" because they were being so loud and rude, that their kids in the dugout were listening and then starting to follow suit. Yes, I had 5 and 6 year old kids in the dugout calling the umpire and other coach "idiot." Pretty embarrassing. Coaching was a joy. The parents on the other hand...

Last summer, we (my daughter's softball team) had a coach on the other team shouting at the fans and when my daughter's coach went out to talk to him, the other coach's wife got in his face and began yelling at him. It was pitiful.

My daughter's coach called the game and took the loss because he said he did not want his team around an adult making a "donkey" of himself. (my daughter's coach did not say "donkey")

I appreciated my daughter's coach calling the game because of the actions of the other coach. It made our parents grateful to have a good coach.

Crazy people!

Try seeing that same game and those same crazed parents from a court-side view, wearing the whistle and striped shirt!

I was a high school basketball official for almost 20 years and often would make eye contact with the parent abusing me ... when they would look right at me, I'd wink. Most often they would see that I was just trying to do my job, but sometimes it would infuriate them and make them worse.

When I would make a call that was totally obvious and no question about it, and that screaming parent was on the first couple of pews where I could speak to them, I would look at him/her and say, "I can get the easy ones right!" They would often smile and leave me alone.

I remember one game when I had laryngitis and could not utter a sound. Not one person screamed at me that night ... I suppose they figured if I couldn't speak I couldn't hear what they were saying! Who knows?

But most of the time I just called the game and ignored them as much as I could.

Sadly, I could be vicious to baseball umps, mostly to have fun. Until one day I was acting like such a fool and all of a sudden realized that my actions might be the only perspective that umpire might have on a "Christian" (out kids went to Christian high schools) and from that moment until this day, I've not said one negative word toward a game official.

you'd be surprised how many are just as childish about what goes (or sometimes doesn't go) in the paper. nice post, I wrote something similar in my sports column a few years back. the sad thing is that we even have to write it. the biggest problem i see today is that many parents are convinced that their kid is way better than he/she actually is. therefore when things don't go their way well then it's obviously the coach or official's fault. it sure isn't precious junior's fault.
