Meet My New Friend Mark

This is my new friend Mark. He came through Childress hitchhiking his way towards New Mexico. My friend Glenna spotted him in town and asked if I’d check on him.

I found him on the edge of town looking for a ride. I picked him up and asked if he’d like some lunch. I found out that Mark loves McDonald’s. Fish sandwiches, Dr. Pepper and strawberry shakes are his favorites.  I told him if he didn’t get a ride out of town today, I’d find him a motel room for tonight. He immediately asked if he could pass up trying to get a ride today and just get the motel room now. He told me he hadn’t slept in a bed in a long time and really wanted to take a shower.

When I left him at his hotel room I asked for a picture. He was happy to obliged. I wish he would have smiled because he had the nicest smile. Looks can be deceiving … Mark was one of the nicest people I’ve ever helped.

I’m not telling you about Mark to say, “Look what I did.” I’m telling you about Mark to say, “Don’t miss out on the blessing of helping others.”

“Suppose someone has enough to live and sees a brother or sister in need, but does not help. Then God’s love is not living in that person.” ~1 John 3:17

My husband, Mike has given homeless people food before. He just orders and extra burger and drink and hands it to them. He is so good!

Looks too me like he was smiling, just not grinning. That is a weary man, finally geting some rest. Genuine gratitude in those eyes. God bless.

Excellent, looks like he needs a new coat. If you buy him one out of your church fund, I’ll send you a check and pay you back.

How is your other friend that you talked about last year that didn’t have running water in his house?

Thanks for these posts. Let me know about his coat.

Trey thanks for you thoughts!! I really love how you have helped me see Jesus the way He has expressed to see Him. What part of NM was Mark going? I believe I have seen him before.

If I see him when he is coming through Donley county (Lelia Lake, Clarendon) I will check on him. Thanks for posting! My husband has several coats so I will put one in my car just in case he would like a spare in addition to one you may have taken him shopping for.

  10. Machele Walden says:

    Trey,
I am moved beyond measure at this moment. I was driving down 287 yesterday and made eye contact with your friend. Just as I passed him, he smiled at me. Odd to say, but his smile had something behind it. I thought of it many times throughout the day. I have had better weeks than this one. I truly believe that God places people in our paths just when we need to feel his presence. God bless you for being the kind soul that you are and helping this man as he without even knowing it made my day brighter. I will never forget his smile.
    Sincerely,
    Machele Walden

Machele … He was a very nice man. He kept smiling, and I finally asked him, “What are you smiling about?” And he said, “O just that I get to stay in a motel tonight.”

  11. Amy O'Connor says:

You can see such kindness in his eyes. The eyes of Jesus, right? =)

You know, people look at me a little strange sometimes because I’m kind to the homeless downtown and will carry on conversation. Sometimes that’s all they really need.

    Trey,
This is just beautiful what you have done. He looks like an angel.

  • He was pretty tough to listen to as well.
  • As crazy as it might sound, Chris Collinsworth just might be worse to listen to than the song Christmas Shoes.
  • Please remember that some Christmas music is incredibly offensive to people with grandmothers who actually were run over by reindeer.
  • Unfortunately, not a great night for "bobcats." :)
  • Chin up Childress Bobcats. We couldn't be prouder. Great fight tonight.
