LEA & I GOT CAUGHT BY OUR SON…

Um… no not doing that.

Actually we were praying in the kitchen when Connor walked in on us. He looked a little surprised and apologized when he realized what we were doing.  I told him it was okay, just to give us a few minutes to finish.
I’ve made plenty of mistakes early in my marriage, one of them was not praying with my wife. I’m glad I figured that one out.  There’s nothing like the intimacy you have when you pray with your spouse (read more about that here).
I haven’t really thought about it this way, but I guess it sets a pretty good example when you get caught by your kids praying.
I’m guessing Lea and I need to get caught more often …

I wish my parents had just been praying together that one time when I was six …

    Scarred for life.

You know that kind of thing affects children deeply and they usually end up repeating the same behavior when they grow up….

  3. JoAnn says:

Peters correct…the kids grow up with that image burned into their memory, bringing those behaviors into their own marriage. What a blessing.

Although reading the Bible is important when a young one “sees” the Bible the message lasts a lifetime.

  6. Stoogelover says:

Having been caught in both scenarios, it’s best to be caught praying.

  7. Warren Baldwin says:

As a kid I remember catching my dad reading the Bible at the kitchen table. “Why are you reading the Bible,” I asked. “Are you teaching class this Sunday?” “No,” dad said. “Oh. Then why are you reading it?” “Just to read it,” he replied. Don’t know how much that one event influenced my later decision to become a preacher, but I’ve been reading the Bible ever since. WB

What next? Trey will be texting prayers to his son’s friends instead of Lea?

I’d love my kids to walk in on me and my husband praying one day. What a great example. But come on, you did expect us to think it… didn’t you :P

A couple of years into our marriage, Larry and I and our girls took turns praying at the dinner table. When the girls were in high school I shared this with a group of friends. I man told me that my daughters and I were usurping my husbands authority. (We were steeped in legalism) I disagreed with that, not openly, probably should have. We continued our ‘habit’. My husband and I still pray together. It’s awesome!

  13. Wade says:

I recently heard someone say that you should also let your kids catch you reading your bible.

    Good stuff!

  14. Peter P says:

Janice, that comment about usurping your husband’s authority would be hilarious if it wasn’t so sad!

Sometimes I can’t believe people make statements like that… sometimes I get afraid that the next person to say something like that will be me!

  15. TREY MORGAN says:

    cwinwc – Amen to that.

Warren – love the story. I bet he didn’t have a clue at the time just how much that influenced you.

    LTC – It’ll happen … :)

Janice – Like Peter said, I totally disagree with whoever the man was. My wife never “usurps my authority” when we pray together. I love it!

    Peter – Amen!
