This past Sunday morning I spoke about my trip to Honduras. Many of my church family had already seen the pictures on my blog, but hadn’t heard the stories behind the pictures. So many of those stories, that the pictures alone couldn’t tell, will really tug at your heart.
I’d prayed all week that the pictures and stories would make them incredibly uncomfortable. (No, I’m not a sick-o who likes to make church people suffer). We simply get too comfortable in our faith sometimes. We want to “take up our easy-chair” instead of our cross, and crosses aren’t supposed to be comfortable. Christianity isn’t always pie-in-the-sky. It’s supposed to be putting others before yourself, and that’s not always comfortable. Okay, enough preaching … back to my story.
I told my wonderful church family this Sunday about my trip and the stories behind the pictures. At the end of the lesson, I showed them a bag of money, Honduran money, that my friend Rickey had brought back from our trip. I told everyone that we’d like for them to have a lempira for their wallet or billfold for two reasons…
1 – So every time they open their wallet and see that Honduran dollar, they’ll remember just how blessed they are.
2 – And also, every time they see that money they’ll remember to say a prayer for the work in Honduras.
I then told them I would swap them one of my lempiras for one of their U.S. bills in their pockets, and we’d give the U.S. dollars to the work in Honduras. At the end of the day when we totaled up all the money, we’d collected $2000 to help feed the hungry in Honduras. I’m blessed to be a part of a church that is so giving, and I love their heart for outreach in both Childress and throughout the world.
By the way, the bag of Honduran money was the equivalent to about $15 US dollars. And if you are interested, I still have some lempira left. If you would like to have one of these remaining Honduran dollars for your purse or wallet, I’ll be happy to trade you a lempira for one of your US bills.
