Happy Opening Day! Although they did play one game last night, today officially starts the 2009 Major League Baseball season. The Morgan family loves watching baseball, especially the Texas Rangers. Many evenings you’ll find us outback playing a pickup game of whiffle-ball.

I love the story of the Bill Veeck. Bill used to own the is the Cleveland Indians. Several years ago after the Cleveland Indians had won the World Series they started the next season with 3 straight losses. They had fans doing crazy things like refusing to eat, or refusing to go to work, or climbing a flagpole and not coming down till the Indians won their first game. They actually lost 11 straight games.

It was after 11 straight losses that Bill Veeck came up with a great idea. He decided to have another “opening day” and went through all the rituals as if the season was beginning all over again. He had the mayor throw out the first pitch. He wanted them to start all over again with a fresh start. They did, by winning that game and breaking out of that slump!

I’m thankful for the times in my life that I’ve got to start over again. Sometimes people make a mess of their lives and need a second chance. Sometimes people even need a third, fourth or fifth chance. The great thing is that God gives you those chances. He loves being the God of second chances. Here are just a few people that got second changes …

  • David
  • Jonah
  • The woman caught in adultery
  • The Samaritan woman
  • Peter
  • Paul
  • The thief on the cross
  • The prodigal son
  • Me and You

You’re never to far from God for another fresh start. You may have struck out so many times you can’t remember, but the God of the second chance wants to give you another fresh start. You don’t need to refuse to eat or climb a flag pole. The good news is that today is “Opening Day,” not only in baseball, but also in your life. You just need to throw out the first pitch to God and let Him do the rest. He is the God of the second chance.

  3. Jason Browning says:

Trey, this was a great post, brother. Opening Day is one of my favorite national holidays too. Happy Opening Day!

  4. Leah Marie says:

I am so thankful that God gives never gives up on us! He is cheering for us to get up and do better each time we fail him. I want to do that for others in my life as well. Although most always God gives second chances, Annanias and Sapphira didn’t get a second chance for their sin of lying to the people and God. How does that fit in with God giving second chances?

  5. Warren Baldwin says:

Thanks, this is a message we need to be reminded of over and over!

  6. Donna G says:

I think that is why I love spring so much…new life, new games, new chances…..That Jesus loves me is enough to make me new every day!

The beauty of baseball – Opening Day.

The beauty of God’s grace like good hitting – covers a multitude of “errors.”

  8. Rick Morgan says:

To Leah Marie, I will bet you that when they died for their lie that they had probably already used up their second chance. The Bible just didn’t go into the details of their lives to fill us in.

    Great post!

  9. Dr. Roger D. Butner says:

What about those who seem to be beyond redemption? I mean, I love the Cubbies! But they have tried every fresh start imaginable, including marching a goat around the bases, and, well, you know…

  10. Bobby Cohoon says:

Any post that mixes baseball and God is GOOD!

Only Trey could take America’s favorite pastime and make it so much more valuable.

  12. LauraLee Shaw says:

Have fun! You know, I’ve had a whole lotta lotta fresh starts…and I’m sure I’ll have more.

  13. TREY MORGAN says:

Leah – I just got in, so I’m sorry I didn’t get to your question earlier. Dr. Butner did a great job answering your question. I think he’s right …. you never know how many 2nd chances Annanias and Sapphira had had. I also think Peter gave her a chance to come clean on the whole thing when he asked her, “Is this REALLY what happened?” Good question … thanks for asking. :)

  14. TREY MORGAN says:

cwincw – well said about God’s grace. I liked that.

    Roger – those poor Cubbies.

Excellent post Trey…I’m thankful that God is the God of second chances!

Q – So, how do you know God is a baseball fan?

A – Gen 1:1 – In the Big-Inning God created the heavens and the earth! :)

    Sorry – I couldn’t help myself…

  17. Evan says:

Great post! You took my favorite ‘holiday’ and used it as a great analogy for one of the most foundational truths about our relationship with God.

Although you know that the REAL Opening Day is today (the Red Sox got rained out yesterday).

  18. Janice says:

Great article….where would we all be without grace?

  19. mrs. jenkins says:

BTW…are you going to post the sermon about sex on your blog? I’ve heard from some it was really good and I’d love to download it!

  20. TREY MORGAN says:

Mrs. Jenkins … I had hoped to get the sermon on sex up today … but I ran out of time. I’ll have it up there tomorrow. Thanks for asking. :)
