I enjoy Christmas movies. It is a tradition in our household to watch certain Christmas movies every year together. We have our favorites and tend to watch the same ones over and over. It got me to thinking about what my favorite Christmas movies are. Shrek the Halls was sure funny this year, but it’s too new to make the list.

So, here are my top 5 Christmas movies…

5. Home Alone (I can’t ever get too much of Kevin McCalister giving it to the bad guys.)
4. The Grinch (Jim Carey was a great Grinch.)
3. Charlie Brown’s Christmas (My favorite as a kid is still one of my top 5.)
2. Elf (Will Ferrel is so funny.)
1. Christmas Vacation (My favorite by far. Does anyone have a Cousin Eddie in their family?)

As for Christmas music, I’m an old fashioned guy. Is there any better traditional Christmas songs than The Christmas Song (You know, “Chestnuts roasting on an open fire…”) and Sleigh Ride? And, I like the traditional singers from the old days too. Johnny Mathis and Bing Cosby are a must in my cd player. Don’t come near me with a Mariah Carey and N-Sync cd. What do they know about Christmas anyway?

As for Christmas music, here are 4 Christmas CD’s I’m currently enjoying on my IPod…
  1. James Taylor at Christmas
  2. Trans-Siberian Orchestra’s – Christmas Trilogy
  3. A Charlie Brown Christmas
  4. Diana Krall – Christmas Songs
  5. Here’s a Christmas CD I’m going to love when it gets here. Have you placed your order for one yet?
So what are some of your favorite movies and music?

  1. Evan Williams says:

my favorite Christmas movie would have to be the Home Alone Series they are all hilarious…and my favorite Christmas song is Im Dreaming of a White Christmas.

  2. Anonymous says:

“The Christmas Song”, you know, like “The Lord’s Supper”. Some songs are just that identifiable.

Of course there was the demented version about babies. Who was that Weird Al? It was something on Dr Demento.

  3. Sherry Fisher says:

A Christmas Story about Ralphie and his Red Ryder BB gun is a must watch!!!! And I agree about Jim Carrey’s Grinch ..that is hilarious!!

Then for music….Trans-Siberian Orchestra in my player right now too~~good stuff. Haven’t heard the JT one..but I’ll bet it is great..I love his voice.

  4. Odgie says:

“A Christmas Story” is classic and mandatory viewing at least once each holiday. A little known gem is “A Midnight Clear.” I highly recommend that one.

    “Father Christmas” by the Kinks.
“Christmas in St. Paul” by Last Train Home”

  5. JD says:

Isn’t that McCauley Culkin in home Alone?

  6. DJG says:

    Funny- Christmas Vacation
    Sappy- The Bishop’s Wife

Music- Not a big fan of hearing Christmas music, but I love to sing carols….

  7. Greg says:

Christmas songs: Mannheim Steamroller and Trans-Siberian Orchestra.

Movies: I don’t get into the movies much, but plan to watch “The Nativity Story” this year on Christmas Eve. Usually we will watch Christmas Vacation as well, but there are scenes and language in that movie that I don’t care for.

  8. TREY MORGAN says:

Sherry – Yea, The Christmas Story with Ralphie in the pink bunny suit and the Chinese people singing, “Fra ra ra ra ra…” is a classic.

Odgie – The Kinks have a Christmas CD? Seriously?

JD – McCauley Culkin is the kid in Home Alone 1 & 2. The sequel was as good as the first. Love both of them.

Greg – Christmas Vacation is the one we’ve recorded from television, so it’s edited. I did notice that this year on WTBS, it wasn’t edited as well as it used to be.

As for the Nativity Story … I’ve heard its great, but haven’t seen it. I’ll put that one on my “must do” list.

  9. Louie Mercer, Frank Mercer and Mike Ellis: The Church for Men Dudes says:

Home for the Holidays with Holly Hunter is a must for viewing this time of year!

  10. Shane Coffman says:

I never grew fond of Home Alone, but the other 4 movies on your list are some of my favorites as well. Christmas Vacation tops them all. It’s the Monty Python & the Holy Grail of Christmas movies, don’t you think?

    I’m a big music guy…so I could list my favorite Christmas cd’s for hours…

    For now, I’ll mention:

    Anything by Mannheim Steamroller

Mercy Me – The Christmas Sessions

    Michael W. Smith – Christmastime

Steven Curtis Chapman – The Music of Christmas

    Avalon – Joy – A Christmas Collection

Point of Grace – A Christmas Story

Thanks for the plug for our Memorial Drive Christmas CD. If you like a cappella music, I think you’ll like ours. I’m not aware of any other Christmas cd quite like it.

We had a glitch in the first production run, but the replacements should be here by Saturday. I look forward to sending them out as a Christmas blessing to others this year!

  11. Alan Gable says:

David Phelps – O Holy Night.
He sings with the Gaithers and even though I’m 26 and I’m supposed to be too young to like the Gaithers yet, he’s pretty good.

    “Elf” is great.

  12. Odgie says:

The Kinks don’t have a whole Christmas CD, just the one song “Father Christmas.” It’s a little snarky, but it’s very funny and concludes with a sweet sentiment.

  13. Karen says:

    Must-see movies every year:
    Holiday Inn
    A Charlie Brown Christmas

Music: Bing, Boston Pops, Vince Guaraldi (Charlie Brown Christmas soundtrack)

  14. Neva says:

As a mother I just have to say “ARE YOU KIDDING ME?”
The Grinch with Jim Carrey? YUKKKKK
Too much adult humor–and Carrey is very creepy in the green fur.
Didn’t like ELF either–not a big Ferrell fan.
But what about some of the classics? Like It’s A Wonderful Life ? My fav
We like Christmas Vacation but Mr. Neva’s favorite is still Die Hard–He truly thinks it is a Christmas movie!
I also like Family Man with Nic Cage.
Music–I like it all except Weird Al, which happens to be Mr. Neva’s favorite–

  15. Liss and MOMMY says:

A White Christmas best movie. Cody knows how much I love this movie and he is not a fan. But one Christmas Lubbock showed it at the drive-in one night only. Cody packed hot chocolate got a sitter and took me. Now I love the movie more for the memory.
Songs I would have to say listening to the kids trying to sing all of them.

  16. AncientWanderer says:

Not a “classic” in the group?

  17. TREY MORGAN says:

    Don … come on brother…

  18. That Girl says:

Does anybody NOT have a Cousin Eddie in their family?

  19. Anonymous says:

    Nativity Story~ very Good!

2 of the moives we watch every year

    Homecoming (Waltons)
    Mupptes Christmas

  21. Dee O'Neil Andrews says:

Greetings from Abilene, Trey. We’re out here this week visiting my mom, but I had to chime in with my two cents worth.

I like all of the movies and music everyone has listed! But, if you haven’t seen “The Navity Story” you really MUST see it. It’s wonderful.

Tom and I went to see it last year and loved it.

    Much love, Dee

  22. Timbra Wiist Owner/Photographer says:

so yesterday i had a cd in hand with three oldie singers and the top one was my fave. . . bing cRosby (i think you’ve omitted an R) but the list of his songs did not include “white christmas” back to the shelf it went. . . its our family fave (song and movie) and charlie brown is right up there too for both song and movie. sadly, i’ve missed the second official tree putting up day. . . can i still do it this weekend?!

  23. David Kirk says:

Charlie Brown Christmas is still the best!

Did you know Weird Al is C of C?

  24. Falantedios says:

I must agree with Mr. Neva. Die Hard is the best Christmas movie ever made. “It’s a Wonderful Life” and “Holiday Inn” are very close seconds, though.

Music? I simply CANNOT believe that no one has listed John Denver and the Muppets!

    Animal eat drum! Eat Drum!
    JD: No, Animal, BEAT drum!
    Animal: Oh. Sorry.

It is the finest Christmas album ever. Speaking of which, The Muppet’s Christmas Carol is pretty stellar too!

  25. Anonymous says:

Got to love the season of Christmas, got to agree with your list Trey, all great movies. Christmas vacation is a family and most definitely personal favorite, as well as Home Alone 1 and 2, the rest in the series are ok, nothing special. Favorite movie is Muppets Christmas Carol with Michael Caine and song would have to be Snoopys Christmas by the Royal Guardsmen.
