CHILDRESS VOTES TO GO WET

I just wanted to let you know that the Childress community chose to go wet today by 2 votes. Yea, two little votes. Amazing isn’t it? And some people probably wondered if their one little vote would be all that important.

So what happens now? Now it’s time for those of us who were on the losing side to be kind, respectful and Christlike to all those who we have differed with for the past two months on this issue. Let’s pray that going wet will bring all the good to our community that has been promised without including the bad.

If you’d like, you can read more about some of the arguments from both sides here and for the election results click here.

And, you won’t believe what those who voted “no” got called. I’ll tell you tomorrow…

    recount…

  3. john dobbs says:

Two votes is pretty close … it probably is worth a recount.

Otherwise … use it as an opportunity to start some addiction classes up … those who struggle with alcohol are already there … but their temptation potentials just got kicked up a notch.

So far we have voted down gambling by a pretty good margin … however… it was a nonbinding referrendum … no teeth.

“the loosing side to be kind, respectful and Christlike”- hmmmm maybe. Don’t play the “Jesus Card” too soon. What kind of Christ should you be with drunks?

  5. Mommysmart says:

Wow two votes. That is unbelievable. I will continue to pray for Childress.

  6. Tim Archer says:

Actually, Trey, I think you were on the binding side, not the loosing side. But that’s just the “grammer polise” in me. :-)

If it makes you feel any better, when God set up a country, it was wet (and not just from milk and honey!).

    Grace and peace,
    Tim

Wow, I was confused b/c when I went to bed it was 915 -868 then went to the gym at 6 this morning and we lost by 2? I am already concerned.. about an issue since this has passed, I just pray that the Lord jumps in before it happens.

  8. Anonymous says:

zach, how do you want the Lord to jump in, turn the water into wine?

  9. TREY MORGAN says:

anonymous – that would have saved everyone around here a lot work :)

It sure would have Trey!.. …

I remember when the two counties in which we grew up in north Alabama voted to go “wet.” All the grand promises of tax revenue turned out to be an empty hoax. The problems caused far outweighed the tax revenues. I, too, think that county should have a recount. Call Cecil in Florida and ask him how to go about that! I think they have perfected the process.

  12. Zach Detwiler says:

    Trey – Information change!
The different was 7 supposively there was a miss calculation… but it is still in favor for going wet. Look at the index’s website for more details

  13. David says:

Does this mean the Childress Church of Christ will now use wine for communion?

Keep us informed. It will be interesting to see how this affects things in town.

Our town, (120,000 or so) voted yesterday on two proposals. (1) The legal sale of mixed beverages in restaurants by food and beverage certificate holders only, and (2) the legal sale of beer and wine for off-premise consumption only.

Results are in. Nothing is changing. It was 59.82% for allowing mixed beverages in restaurants by food and beverage certificate holders only (which they already do). And it was 53.27% against the sale of beer and wine for off-premise consumption only. It was defeated for the third time in about a decade, but the margin is narrowing.

We’ll see if we get the new grocery stores that have been tentatively scheduled to start construction.

It looks like I will have to wait another year to become an alcoholic because I am just too lazy to drive 10 minutes to the next town over that is Damp.

  14. Dee O'Neil Andrews says:

That’s amazing that the loss was only by 7 votes! What percentage of the population of Childress voted, or do you know?

We had state wide voting here in Mississippi yesterday and the voter turnout was really low.

    Just wondering.

  15. Baptist Man says:

I must be TOTALLY naive. I really didn’t know there were still cities or counties in America that were “dry.” I’m not surprised to see the results of the vote. I am saddened though. I will pray for your city.

I’m hearing rumors that one little restaurant will expand to have a bar/club. For open house, the waitresses are supposed to dress up as hookers and stand on the highway to draw people in.

Vernon went wet a while back. One person who lives there said the only difference they could see was empty beer bottles thrown out everywhere. Do you think those who voted wet will organize a group to pick up the litter?
