Last night I asked Lea to come and sit down so we could talk. She did and said, “What is it?”

I said as serious as I could, “I need to know, what’s a better night for you and I to go to a World Series game, Saturday or Sunday?” I think she knew there was no possible way I could be serious. We’d talked earlier in the day about how every game was completely sold out and the only tickets available were standing room only tickets going for nearly $500 a piece. Despite her love for the Rangers, there was no way we would ever pay that kind of money for tickets, much less standing room only tickets.

Her facial expression changed to a mix of frustration and disbelief, and she said with a little sternness in her voice, “Don’t kid around with things like this.”

She thought I was kidding, but I wasn’t. I’d just got off the phone with my sweet friend, Tiffany, who works with the Los Angeles Dodgers. On a couple of occasions Tiffany had told me that through her work she sometimes had access to tickets to games. When I contacted her last Saturday, I asked about World Series tickets. It just so happened that she was able to get two for Sunday night’s World Series game between the Texas Rangers and the San Francisco Giants.

Having connections and who you know make all the difference in the world.

The same is true for heaven. There’s no getting in on your own. Even if you had all the money in the world, you couldn’t buy your way in. If you do more acts of kindness than anyone that’s ever lived, that won’t get you in either. You have got to have the right connection. You’ve got to know the right person. Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth and the life, and no one comes to the Father except through me.” Yes, he’s the connection. There’s no heaven without him. So have you contacted him?

Having connections and who you know make all the difference in the world.

This Sunday night, I’m going to a World Series game only because of my sweet friend Tiffany.

One day, I’m going to heaven only because of my sweet friend Jesus.

If you’ve watched the news lately you know that…

  • The stock market is down.

  • Gas prices are high.

  • The economy is bad.

  • Unemployment is up.

  • The future is bleek.

And yet, I haven’t lost one single second of sleep. In fact, I haven’t worried or even really given it a whole lot of thought.

My life and my happiness do not fluctuate with the market. My future does not depend on our economy. I refuse to panic, worry or fret, because my future is bright. My treasures are in a market that is totally secure.

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.” ~ Jesus

  • Complaining

  • Spend every minute I could with my wife and boys.
  • I’d visit as many friends and family and I could to make sure they were ready.
  • I’d eat all the things I love to eat, but don’t. Krispy Kreme donuts, whole milk, chicken fried steak and two desserts with every meal.
  • I’d pray more.
  • I’d hug more.
  • I’d complain less.
  • I’d get my priorities right.

So why aren’t I doing these things now?

We don’t know when the Lord will return, but we are told to be ready when He does (Luke 12:40).

T-ball. Could there be any form of baseball that’s more pure? There are no steroids (unless you think “Sweet Tarts” are a bit questionable). There is no obsession with winning. And, somehow, everyone wins every game. Sweet, simple and untainted, that’s what t-ball is.

I have been blessed to coach all four of my boys in T-ball over the years. And, this past Monday evening Cooper, my five-year-old, had his very first T-ball practice. He asked 25 times last week, “How many days till my first T-ball practice?” Then on Monday he started the, “How many hours till T-ball practice?” When T-ball practice finally got started Cooper told me, “Dad, playing T-ball is like being in heaven, this is awesome!”

It got me to thinking that maybe there are some similarities between Christianity, heaven and T-ball. Let see, in T-ball …

  • You don’t keep score.

  • You never get put out.

  • Strikes don’t count.

  • At the end, you always win.

That pretty much makes T-ball perfect, just like heaven. You never got put out, your strikes didn’t count against you and you leave the game a winner.

In this old world I’ve decided to put my faith and life in Jesus’ hands. I’ve given him my life because I need him as my Savior. And when I did this: He put me on his team (I don’t get put out), he didn’t count my strikes (sins) anymore, and best yet, when the end of the game comes (life), I leave here a winner.

Yep, Cooper’s theology was right on target, T-ball IS pretty much like heaven. Jesus is an awesome coach. And I’m so thankful he invites me to be on his team.

Kids are eager for things like…

  • Christmas
  • Birthdays
  • The End of School

Adults are eager for things like…

  • A Vacation
  • A New Job
  • Marriage or a New Baby

How many times have we said, “Boy, I am so eager for the Lord’s return,” or “I wish I could go to heaven right now.” Those aren’t phrases we use much anymore. In fact, sometimes we get so comfortable in this world that the end doesn’t even cross our mind. Are we too busy living in the here and now?

Everyone has questions. We ask them everyday. My son came in the other day with this funny list of questions. Thought I’d share them with you and then add some that are a little more serious at the end.

  • When a cow laughs does milk come up its nose?

  • Why is abbreviation such a long word?

  • When you choke a smurf, what color does it turn?

  • What was the best thing before sliced bread?

  • Do you need a silencer if you are going to shoot a mime?
MORE QUESTIONS:

  • Why do I think I know who God gives His grace and mercy to?

  • Why do I sing if it’s not coming from the heart?

  • Why do I talk about holiness and purity, and then welcome the filth and immorality into my home through the television?

  • Why do I expect more from others than I do myself?

  • Why am I not reading my Bible regularly if it’s supposedly so important to me?

  • Why do I give if it’s only out of obligation?

  • Why do I live, talk and act one way on Sunday, and another way at work on Monday?

  • Why do I carry my cellular phone everywhere but can’t remember to take my Bible anywhere?

  • Why do I hold these $5 petty grudges and grievances against others when God has forgiven me of millions of dollars of moral debt (Matthew 18:21-35)?

  • Why aren’t I more excited about getting to heaven?

  • “When we all get to heaven, what a day of rejoicing that will be; When we all see Jesus, we’ll sing and shout the victory.” Why wait till then?!

Wow, what a weekend. Christmas was great, but the Dallas Cowboy game was a bitter pill to swallow. I’m still pretty much in shock. As most of you know, our family attended the game (if you want to call it that) in person. I can’t get over the fact that I spent months stashing back money to save enough to take my family to the Dallas Cowboys game. We also spent weeks talking about how great it was going to be to watch a “live” Cowboys football game. We told everyone we’d be there. For Christmas we all got new “Cowboys” gear to wear to the game. And as luck would have it, all our excitement went right down the drain when the Philadelphia Eagles smacked around our Dallas Cowboys during all four quarters. Ouch. At the end of the game I sat there in the stands feeling so cheated. All that saving and all that excitement seemed to be for nothing. I wanted to ask Jerry Jones for a $300 refund. It was just so frustrating to be so excited about the game for so long, just to be let down with a mighty crash.

It’s a good thing heaven isn’t going to be like that. There will be no let downs when we get there. There will be no disappointments. No one will get to heaven and feel cheated. No one will say, “I’m not sure it was worth it.” And no one, I mean no one will be asking for their money back. Jesus reminds us in Matthew 6:19-21 what I should have remembered this weekend, “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

So, I’ll keep working, I’ll keep serving and I’ll keep loving, because one day heaven will all be worth it.

For the past three weeks every kid in America has been able to tell you exactly how many days until Christmas. They’ve had a hard time falling asleep just because they’re anticipating Christmas. This time of year you’ll hear phrases like, “I’m so ready for Christmas,” and “I can’t wait until Christmas.”

How do you suppose our lives would be different if we were as excited about heaven as kids are about Christmas? What if we regularly went around saying, “Hopefully, it won’t be long” and “I’m so ready” or “I can’t wait.” Below I’ve started a list of a few things to help you get excited about heaven. And so, with apologies to David Letterman, direct from the home office in Childress, Texas here is the top ten list of reasons why I’m excited about Heaven…

Number 10: WE GET A NEW BODY (1 Corinthians 15:50-54, 2 Corinthians 5:4)
Most people are not really happy with their body. Billions are spent yearly to cover up, make up, lift up and change flaws in our bodies. Our earthly body gets tired, feels pain and gets sick. With age it moves slower, sags, our eyes dims, our ears dull, and things falls out (hair & teeth). Twice the doctor has told me “it’s cancer.” And although I’ve survived both times, my body still bears the marks of the battle. In heaven we’ll get a new body, a better one, an eternal one. We’ll get a body that doesn’t get tired, feel pain, get sick or cancer. I’m excited about my new body!

Number 9: WE GET A CUSTOM BUILT HOUSE (John 14:1-3)
I love the house I live in now, but it’s far from perfect. I love the cabin in the mountains that my wife’s family has, but it’s not perfect. There is no such thing as a perfect house in this life. That is except God’s house. Living in a perfect house built by God is one reason why heaven is going to be great! He has been working on it 2,000 years … and creation took just 6 days.

Number 8: WE GET TO EAT GREAT FOOD (Matthew 8:11; Revelation 19:9)
Who doesn’t like to eat? I’m thinking of things like Chinese food, steak and more Chinese food. In heaven we get to eat and the food will literally taste like “heaven.” I don’t know about you but I’m looking forward to taking part in the mother of all buffets. And I’m guessing calories won’t count! :)

Number 7: WE GET TO TALK WITH BIBLE CHARACTERS
For years we have heard about them, read about them, and even imagined what it would have been like to be them. Now we get to meet them and talk with them. You can ask David what it was like to fight Goliath. You can ask Noah what it was like living in the ark. You can ask Moses about parting the Red Sea. And then there is Daniel to ask about the lion’s den. Or you could ask Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego about the fiery furnace. You could ask a question to Mary, or Paul or Peter. Who are you looking forward to talking with?

Number 6: WE WILL GET TO SEE AND SPEAK WITH OUR LOVED ONES (1 Thessalonians 4:13-17)
I am looking forward to being with my loved ones again. Aren’t you? Seeing those who have died and gone on before me. My wife & I have a baby waiting for us there that we are very anxious to meet. Wow, it will be the greatest family reunion of all times. I’m excited about that.

Number 5: WE WILL GET TO LIVE IN A PERFECT WORLD (Revelation 21)
Heaven is going to be a perfect place in every form and fashion. God will be there and so will the Son. There will be no more darkness or night. You’ll find the river of life, the tree of life and streets of gold. Heaven is going to be exciting, the perfect world I’ve always dreamed of.

Number 4: HEAVEN IS GOING TO BE EXCITING BECAUSE OF THE “NO-MORES” (Revelation 7:16-17)
Let me explain what I mean by “no-mores.” There will be no more hunger, thirst, tears, death, pain or impure things. When you and I get to heaven there is going to be some awesome “no-mores”, and these “no-mores” should really inspires us to keep going and give us a living hope.

Number 3: IT WILL BE THE LAST TIME WE FALL (Romans 7:15-25)
I often feel like Paul in Romans 7. I too find myself doing the things I don’t want to do, and I don’t do the things that I want to do. I get tired of letting my God down. Yes, I know that I’m saved by grace. I know that his blood can and does wash away every stain. Nevertheless, I still get tired of failing and falling. Do you? This is another reason I’m excited about heaven. There will be no more failing and no more letting God down.

Number 2: IN HEAVEN WE WILL TAKE PART IN AN AWESOME WORSHIP SERVICE (Revelation 5:11-14; 7:9-12; 19:1-8)
I love great worship. I love enthusiastic worship. I love worship full of energy, excitement, smiling faces and lifted hearts. I look forward to worshipping in heaven, because it’s going to be out of this world. As the song says “WHAT A DAY OF REJOICING THAT WILL BE.” It’s going to blow our minds, and it’s going to lift the roof and rock the walls of heaven.

And the Number 1 Reason Heaven will be Exciting: WE WILL GET TO SEE GOD (1 John 3:2; John 14:3)
The fact that we will be with God forever will make heaven worth it all! Can you think of any reasons that I’ve missed?
