Happy Blog Anniversary

My blog turns 5 years old today. I can’t believe I’ve stuck with this for five whole years. With Facebook and other places to share your thoughts, sometimes I wonder why I’m still blogging, but for now, I am. I’d like to give a shout-out to a handful of people…

Thank you to those who take time to stop by and read. You may or may not have ever left a comment, but you stop by, and I thank you.
Thanks to my friend, Monica, my fairy-blog-mother, who five years ago encouraged me to start blogging. She not only encouraged me, but also spent a lot of time showing me how to set up a blog.
A BIG thanks to my sweet and beautiful wife, Lea, who three times a week has to hear me ask, “Hey babe, would you proof my blog before I publish it?” Also thanks to my kids who allow me to blog about them … like it or not.
I’ve made some amazing friendships through my blog. V.A., a dear sweet man who we’ve fallen in love with. He has kind of adopted our family and we have been blessed by him. He has supported my family on mission trips and shared both his love, friendship and wisdom. N.B., who I’ve never met, but she has probably been reading my blog since day one. Her constant friendship and encouragement have been uplifting.
God has used this blog for some incredible new ministries to take place. One year we raised $12,000 for feeding the Dump People in Honduras. A year later God helped us raise $50,000 more to continue the work of feeding hungry people in Honduras. In two weeks I’ll make another trip to Honduras to help with that ministry of feeding hungry people.

Thank you for allowing me to share my thoughts, frustrations, humor and more of my life than I probably should. Have a GREAT Thanksgiving.

What Attracts me to A Blog?

I taught a class this morning on how to successfully use blogging and social media for ministry. I shared a few points on what I think makes a successful blog. Here were my points…

Make your posts relevant. Give me stuff that applies today and is relevant to me as a Christian, husband, father, etc.
Make it short. No one, including myself, has time to read LONG blogs. No matter how relevant and important a topic, if it’s really long, I’ll skip right over it.
Make me laugh. I love blogs that make me laugh. Allow your personality to come through.
Challenge me. Don’t just give me some information, but challenge my thinking, my lifestyle and my way of life. Challenge me to be a better person, husband, Christian or father.
Be open. Let yourself come through. Tell us about who you are, what you like and what you don’t like. Anonymous blogs are nice, but if we don’t know you, we won’t become attached.
Update regularly. Nothing is more frustrating than finding a blog you love and it’s only updated once or twice a month.

I am so excited! I’m like a kid at Christmas. It took me a long time to come around, but now I’m officially on WordPress. It was tough to teach this old dog new tricks. I thought if Blogger was good enough for Paul and Silas, it had to be good enough for me.

There’s a lot of new things I’m excited about. I love the tabs at the top of the page that take you straight to my favorite categories like Church, Dads, Honduras, Marriage, Men, Morgan Family and Top Ten Lists. I also like the fact that my blogroll is not included as a tab in the top left corner of every page. John Dobbs has got to be excited about this because he won’t have to do the “word verification” that Blogger always required. There are so many other things I’ll be tweaking over the next few days t00.

One of the main things I am excited about is the ability to reply to your comments after you leave me a comment. Under the blogger format, I’d just have to leave random comments down the page and hope you noticed them. If you leave a comment, and I hope you will, the first time it will have to be approved by WordPress, but never again after that.

Although, I like the “About Me” tab at the top of the page, it took me forever to come up with something to put there. And, a big thanks to my friend Ericka Moore for doing the picture for that page.

To celebrate the opening of my new blog I’m having a give away. My friend Deb suggested me giving Connor away, but as much as that kid eats, that wouldn’t be a prize but more of a liability. So I think a $25 Barnes & Noble gift card will be a great thing to give away. All you have to do is leave me a comment, and in the next couple of days I’ll pick a number at random and give it away. And again, a big thanks to my friend Peter Pollock for designing my blog.

When you get a chance, listen to their podcast. I have no doubt you’ll love it too.

FEEDING THE DUMP PEOPLE ON May 5th

Two hungry Honduran boys at the city dump that are enjoying food and a drink!

MAY 5th WE ARE GOING TO “FEED THE DUMP PEOPLE”: About 5 months ago I did a post called “Feeding the Dump People.” It dealt with the people of Honduras who resort to finding food at the city dump for themselves and their families. With your help that one post raised around $1500 to feed the families at the dump. Absolutely every cent we raised went to feed hungry people. God has really placed it on my heart to do this again. My friend Terri Tendall, who is a missionary there and who regularly takes food to the dump, told me they always need funds to help with this. So on May 5th, we’re going to have a “Feed the Dump People” marathon on my blog and try to raise $2500 to feed hungry people. Why would we want to do this? Two reasons: 1) Jesus said this about us helping others, and 2) Because it breaks my heart that sometime today we are going to ask, “What do we want to eat today,” and the people people at the dump will ask, “Will we get to eat today?” I’m really excited about this project. I’m planning on having some giveaways, having a chat-room open that day to visit about pledges and other cool things that I’ll tell you about later. I’m really going to need some help on promoting this and I’ll tell you how next week. Don’t forget that May 5th is “Feed the Dump People” day.

TULSA WORKSHOP 2009

This past weekend flew by. We had a fabulous time at the Tulsa Workshop. We got to see so many friends and meet a bunch of new people. Here are a few things I’ll remember from this year’s workshop…

The Blizzard: Snow blew in on Saturday and dropped about 6 inches of snow (see pictures below). I knew it always rained at the Workshop, but I’d never seen snow before. I think the snow will help this year’s workshop go down as one of the most memorable. It will forever be remembered as “the workshop when we had the blizzard.”
AIM: The young people in AIM got to present their team and a flag from the country where they’ll be doing mission work to a group of over a thousand. They got a HUGE standing ovation. :) It was pretty emotional.
The Friends: Heaven is going to be a place where we get to have a big reunion. We’ll see old friends and family, and hug lots of necks. This weekend was like that for me. I got to see old friends that I haven’t seen in years. This past weekend really makes me ready for the great reunion in heaven.
Bloggers: There were a bunch of bloggers that showed up at the workshop this year. People I’ve never met personally, but know from the blog world. It’s really amazing when you can put a face and a personality with a name. Brad Palmore and Theobloggers did a great job hosting a luncheon for everyone to get together. Thanks for doing this.
Blog Readers: It was also neat to meet some people who read my blog and talk blogging with them. I really loved the look on Lea’s face when she came up and whispered to me, “Someone just came up and asked if I was Lea Morgan. I told them I was and they said they knew me from reading your blog.” :) I had the opportunity Saturday afternoon to teach a class on blogging and had a blast doing it.
Things I learned: John & Maggie Dobbs are quite possibly the nicest people in the whole world, and Maggie Dobbs has the most incredible laugh. Patrick Mead is quite possibly the funniest man in the world. I don’t know where he pulls these one-liners from, but they never stop. Brian Nicklaus is my hero for coming all the way from New Jersey. I can’t wait to spend more time with him because he was SO much fun. Steve Tucker is a Nebraska farmer who’s as big as a mountain but has an even bigger heart. I also got to meet one of my favorite bloggers in the world, Amanda Sanders. I was in awe of her

WHAT ATTRACTS YOU TO A SPECIFIC BLOG?

I’m certainly not an expert in the field of blogging, but somehow I’ve been blessed by being asked to speak at the Tulsa Workshop this year on the subject of blogging. I’m still in the process of learning how to be a better blogger.

Something I’ve learned over the past couple of years is that the blogs I love to read and are drawn to follow these simple blogging rules …

Post Regularly – It’s really hard for me to get into a blog that only posts a few times a month.

Tickle my Emotions – Make me laugh or make me cry, but emotions play a huge role in attracting me to a blog.

Be Relevant – I love people who post about topics that are real or things that are part of life. These are things I can relate to.

Challenge Me – I love a post that not only makes me think, but challenges what I believe or how I live.

Be Yourself – Let me see your personality. Tell me what you like, dislike, and struggle with. Be open.

Keep it Short – Others may like to read long posts, but I can’t do LOOOOONG posts.

Comments – If you want to draw people to your blog, leave comments on other’s blogs.

The cool thing TheoBloggers is doing right now is they are having the 1st ever “People’s Choice” blogging awards. They are looking for you to nominate your favorite blog or blogs for an award. Today I celebrate this blog’s second birthday. I don’t exactly know what that means other than I’ve been at it for two years. To celebrate today, I’ll share “11 Signs you might be a Blog-Addict”…

Your spouse carries a picture of the back of your head in their wallet because this is what they normally see.
Your blog’s stat-tracker goes down and you have a panic attack.
Your wife asks, “How was your day?” and you respond by saying, “Did you not read my blog today?”
Your spouse’s lawyer serves you with divorce papers by leaving a comment on your blog.
One of your children walk up to you while you’re at your computer and you ask, “Now, which one are you?”
Your mom finds out you’re having another child by reading your blog.

UPDATING THE BLOGROLL, TWITTER AND DAVID COOK

(BLOGROLL): I’d love to add your blog to my blogroll. I’m in the process of updating my blogroll. My blogroll is full of blogs that I like to read and most have my blog linked on their site. I try to keep it updated with new blogs and take down old broken links. The blogroll does gets lots of traffic, so I know it’s getting used by others too. You can also email me your link by clicking here!

Anyway I’d LOVE to add your blog to my blogroll if it’s not already on there. I’m a little cautious about just adding blogs without permission, because there are a lot of people who want to keep their blogs pretty private. If you are willing to let me add you to my blogroll, just leave me a comment with your blog address and I’ll get you put in. And if you haven’t stopped by my blogroll, there are a lot of good blogs to read over there.

(TWITTER): Okay, I’m going to give this Twitter thing a try. After a little encouragement from John Dobbs and Tucker, I finally signed up. My twitter updates are on the left hand side of my blog just under my profile. Maybe I can keep up with this better than I can my Facebook. I find it hard enough just to keep up with my blog.

(DAVID COOK): The Morgan family got to spend a little time with extended family this past weekend. The picture of the girl on the left is Jenny, one of Lea’s cousins we watched grow up into a beautiful wife and mother. I did her and her husband’s wedding a few years ago. What I didn’t know is that she is friends with American Idol’s David Cook. I told her I didn’t believe her, so she showed me this picture. Sure enough … Jenny and David Cook.

I guess that still doesn’t make me famous, it just makes me know someone, who knows someone who is famous… shucks!

STUFF I’M THINKING RIGHT NOW

I’m thinking that I love Sundays. Yesterday was an awesome day. God was worshipped, the church building was packed, visitors were present and the singing was fabulous. Now, if we could just figure out a way to get the preaching to improve.

Some religious blogs are, “…too immersed in the spiritual realm, blah, blah, blah.”
I’m thinking that I don’t know how or why my blog was reviewed over at Blog-Search-Engine.com this week, but I sure appreciate their kind words. I thought it was cool that TreyMorgan.net is currently being listed as a feature blog. I did get a chuckle out of the part that said some religious blogs are, “…too immersed in the spiritual realm, blah, blah, blah.”
I’m thinking that the testosterone was thick Thursday night at the For Men Only Garage Bible study. I had 14 men show up and a few call and say they couldn’t make it, but would be there next week. We’re studying about Samson and learning from his mistakes; how to be real men. I did have a couple of Mandles burning just to give the garage a manly smell.
I’m thinking that I’m excited about the Morgan family going to Dallas this weekend. We’re going to catch a Texas Ranger game Friday night and do a little relaxing on Saturday. Then on Sunday I’m preaching at the Lakeside Church of Christ in Mansfield, Texas. Mine and Lea’s former youth minister, Shawn Williams, is the preacher there. Shawn had a big influence on Lea and I when we were in high school. I’m always a little nervous around Shawn, because he knew me when I was a teenager, and I’m sure he could tell everyone a couple of bad things I’ve done (smile). Lea is safe though, she was as perfect back then as she is today!
I’m thinking I’m sad for Evan today. Evan is one of our high school seniors at church and spends quite a bit of time at my house. Last night Evan took a turn on a dirt road a little too quickly and wound up wrecking his pickup. Evan was fine but the truck was not. I went and helped him pull his pickup out of the ditch. I hurt for Evan last night. It’s never easy having to tell your mom and dad you wrecked your vehicle (I know, I’ve been there). Evan, is a regular reader of this blog, so I’d like to say to him, “Hang in there buddy, it’s going to be okay.”

How about leaving Evan a word of encouragement today? He could use it!

TULSA SOUL WINNING WORKSHOP

I was in Tulsa last week for their Soul Winning Workshop with my two oldest boys (Taylor and Parker) and Ryan, the kid I call my fifth son. (Zack, in the blue AIM shirt, is a new friend who’s headed to Scotland.) While I was gone, Lea wrote a couple of posts for me (here and here). What an amazing wife I have. Not only did she post, but did you notice she did what looked a lot like a “Top 10″ list. You know me, I love top ten lists. Once again it goes to show you, I married up!

What an amazing experience I had last weekend at the Tulsa Workshop. I heard some fantastic lessons on prayer, and the praise and worship was what I imagine heaven being like. It was a good chance for me to refill my tank spiritually.

I met a ton of old friends, bloggers and a bunch of people who read my blog. There is nothing more cool, and at the same time, more humbling than someone you don’t know coming up and saying, “Hey, I read your blog!” Here are a few of the bloggers I visited with …

Shane Coffman – What an amazing man. I thoroughly enjoyed getting to meet him and hug his neck. Shane was having some health issues and wasn’t feeling well. He did do an outstanding job leading the praise and worship. I’ve enjoyed getting to know Shane through his blog, but he’s even more amazing in person. Besides I couldn’t help but laugh when I saw him, his picture on his blog looks exactly like him!

Patrick Mead - I’ve listened to Patrick Mead sermons on my iPod for about a year, but this was the first time I had a chance to meet him and hear him live and in person. Outstanding! You can hear Patrick Mead sermons by clicking here.

John Dobbs - Believe it or not I was in the presence of royalty. I finally got to meet and visit with the Blog King, John Dobbs. John has one of the longest running blogs around. It was a blessing to meet and spend a little time with this man of God. I really wanted more of John’s time to visit, but it just didn’t work out. Every time I saw John I couldn’t help but smile. What a great man.

Darin Hamm – Got a chance to meet Darin after a Wade Hodges class. We didn’t get much time to visit, but it was sure nice to meet a guy who writes an amazing blog!

Timbra – Timbra may get the award for coming the farthest (from California). Timbra is a long time friend and it was good to hug her neck and see her family.

Brie – Here’s a cool youth minister’s wife who is full of wit and wisdom. Enjoyed having lunch with her crew on Friday! I always enjoy Brie hanging out on my blog because she leaves such amazing comments!

Terry Rush – Organized the Tulsa Workshop and did a great job!

Keith Lancaster - Enjoyed visiting with Keith on Thursday. Keith is the long time member and founder of the singing group Acappella.

Craig Hicks - My long time friend and preaching school classmate. Craig spoke on Friday to the teenagers. I slipped in and listened to him preach. Craig is still the best preacher I know. His lesson was amazing. Hearing Craig and getting to visit with him made the whole trip worthwhile. On my way home from the Workshop I concluded, “Nothing has changed. Craig is still my favorite preacher.”

James Adair - Got to see my old friend James for a few minutes on Friday. James and his wife, Kathy, are long time bloggers. It was good to see James and catch up on his life. By the way, Kathy wrote a fantastic post on marriage yesterday called, “Who’s bringing sexy back?” You got to check it out!

I also caught up with Dwight Whitsett, a blogger who is full of wisdom and passion for missions. I’m glad I finally got to meet Dwight!

I do need to give a shout out to my new friend Tucker who was willing to drive numerous hours with his family of five, just to, in his words, “Meet his blogging idols.” He told me that he had made it his goal to come to Tulsa to meet Craig Hicks, John Dobbs and myself. He came up to me at CiCi’s pizza on Friday and introduced himself. What a super nice guy. I think Tucker got his wish and met all three of us. I just hope we didn’t let him down. Ha!

LEA WILL BE POSTING TOMORROW

I’m heading to the Tulsa Workshop today. I’m excited about the speakers, the worship, catching up with old friends and the chance to meet a bunch of fellow bloggers that will be there.

I’ve been asking Lea to post for a long time. I think she got tired of me asking, so she gave in and said, “Yes.” I didn’t know what she was going to write about, but she used a suggestion from one of you readers. THOUGHTS FROM A PREACHER’S WIFE

I’m pumped. I can’t believe Lea agreed to it. I’ve been asking her for a long time and she finally said, “Sure.”

What is it? Here are a few guesses from yesterday…

Motorcycle? (Nope – My mom said “No” under the comments section).

Lea starts her own blog? (Can’t see her doing that).

Put up the Christmas tree? (Awesome thought, but I know she’d say no).

NASCAR? (As much as I wish … nope!)

A Baby? (Holy smokes, people, I’m too old!).

Something to do with sex? (Nope, but I was a little surprised that it took till comment 14 for someone to think of it).

Corny, yes, but I’ve been asking Lea for months to be a guest blogger on my blog. Okay, I know it’s not as exciting as a baby or a motorcycle, but it is to me. Lea’s personality is both quiet and reserved. She’s not big on having attention drawn to her, but she’s so full of wisdom. I honestly didn’t think she’d ever agree to this. I’ve asked her if she could do something for us next week, and she said she would. I feel a little like the persistent widow (Luke 18:1-8).

What’s she going to write? I actually have no idea (which kind of scares me). Lea may share her thoughts about being a minister’s wife or about being the mother of four boys (five if you include me). I’ve given her a couple of ideas, but I just don’t know what she’s cooking up. I’m not sure she knows yet, but I told her she could do anything she wants.
