I think the gift of recognition. So many times, kids want nothing more than for their parents to notice them, see them doing something well that they love to do, and tell them that they are doing a good job.

Hi Trey,
I just stumbled across your blog and was so encouraged by many of the posts...especially this one. Currently my husband and 2 children and I are missionaries in Africa. This is our first Christmas here and for the first time in our WHOLE lives we see the skewed view of Christmas that is portrayed in America. Our neighbors have NOTHING and yet parents in America are complaining about not having the RIGHT doll or guitar for their children. This Christmas everyone is getting ONE gift and we are sharing our day with some African friends. Christmas is about sharing the love of Jesus Christ...NOT US...when will we get that? It took us moving to a 3rd world country to see how incredibly spoiled we really are as Americans. Thank you Trey for being HONEST...
Blessings...
Joy

Thank you for including the gift of spiritual training. I am so annoyed when parents who don't teach their children about God explain their choice away as not forcing religion on their children. They feel they want to let the children decide for themselves.

Funny, but I don't let our kids (okay, maybe the teenager to a certain extent) plan their meals out because they'd make stupid choices. It would be Snickers bars and macaroni & cheese every day. So why would I let them make stupid spiritual choices?

I think the answer is that the parents that raise their children that way don't truly believe in the gospel. I know that sounds harsh, but if you REALLY believe it you'd appreciate how important spiritual discipline is. I think we need to teach from the top-down, because if the parents don't truly believe, they aren't going to raise their kids to do so.

Sorry, I was preaching just a tad on this one. And I know I'm preaching to the choir in this group!

Peace,

Ray

Trey, great gifts. I hope I did reasonably well in giving those to my kids.

I like Tim's gift (you slay me Tim). But I want the LCD in 42" and surround sound. That way I don't have to buy so many theater tickets.

How about what I really need this Christmas? The gift of contentment.

“But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that.” (1Tim 6:6-8)

That's what I want. Contentment. And a plasma TV.

Teens want wisdom?

I thought thirty-year-olds wanted the wisdom they thought they had in their teens!

Spiritual discipline and training go hand in hand. We struggle so often because our own training wasn't very effective.

I think something Renovare' or one of the other spiritual discipline publishers should seek out writing on Spiritual Discipline for Parents and Children.

Nick

Greg stole mine! LOL....i was going to say "I can play guitar"....hot item my son wants but is going to have to wait until his birthday. I think we can give them wisdom. Of course, we are not the author of wisdom God is...but man imagine all the teens out there who wished they had a little bit of wisdom. Teach them to pray for wisdom. I think I saw that in a blog somewhere recently ...

Have a great day!

Guitars. But I can see why you might not include them in this list of most excellent gifts!

As for quality verses quantity time ... I say the most important is quality time, and LOTS of it.

One thing I think is important...and it may fall under spiritual training...is:
I wish that as parents we would see how important it is that our children know that they are "fearfully and wonderfully made" by God...and that He has a purpose for them. God created their life with something in mind. If our children know there is meaning for their life in God, maybe they wouldn't search for that meaning in bad relationships, alcohol or drugs.
Does that make any sense?
