30 Hour Fast on Dump Day

Are you up for a 30 hour fast?

How long could you go without food? Could you last 30 hours without food? There are some of us who can’t go a few hours without hollering, “I’m hungry.” As most of you know, on May 4th, we’re having our 3nd annual “Dump Day” to raise money to feed the hungry people who live and eat at the Tegucigalpa, Honduras dump.

This year I want to do more than just give to feed the hungry… I want to understand (to a very small degree) what it’s like to go hungry. I want to fast 30 hours during the “Dump Day” marathon, BUT I don’t want to do it alone. I want to challenge some of you to do it with me.

This year I’m challenging you to a Dump Day fast. A 30 hour fast that will coincide with Dump Day. It will remind us two things…

  • It will remind us that there are hungry people in this world, and we can’t ignore them or overlooked them. I’m not sure there’s ever been a day in the Tegucigalpa dump when the people have actually had more to eat than me … but on May 4th they will. I will be fasting and on that day (Dump Day, May 4th), and my friend Marc Tindall will be feeding rice, beans, tortillas, bananas and water to the people at the dump. They will eat more that day than I do.
  • It will also remind us that we are VERY blessed and we need to share what we have. Today 25,000 children under the age of 5 will die from a lack of food and from poverty. Sadly, that shouldn’t be.  “If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person?” 1 John 3:17

So, my challenge you to fast from Tuesday night until Thursday morning. Then you can take the money you would have spent on meals and give that money to hungry people. What better way to spend the money you saved on meals? :)

So, who’s with me? Are you in? Leave me a comment and let me know.

    I will join you!!!

  2. Mulling it over. Why 30 hours and not 24?

    • Trey Morgan says:

Adam … that’s a great question. I just figured bedtime Tuesday until Thursday morning when I get up was 30 hours. I think if you want to do 24 it’s great.

  3. Kim Robinson says:

    I’m in.

  4. Danielle says:

I can’t because of medical issues (Diabetic) But as long as I can do a liquid diet during that time, then ok. I will have a prayer fest for those hours on behalf of everyone involved!!

    • Trey Morgan says:

Danielle… you bring up a great point. You shouldn’t fast if you’re nursing a baby, a diabetic or on medications that require you take food. BUT you can choose to fast from other things. For example someone might want to give up their Sonic for the month or TV for the week. Not all fasting has to be with food. And, even though we are fasting on May 4th, it’s okay to drink water or liquids.

  5. Jesse says:

I can go without at least that long for the sake of those in need. Count me in. Remember why you’re fasting, it’s not for the kudos of men, but the people living in misery.

    Matt. 6:16-18
Whenever you fast, do not put on a gloomy face as the hypocrites do, for they neglect their appearance so that they will be noticed by men when they are fasting Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full. “But you, when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face
so that your fasting will not be noticed by men, but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you.

Sitting here with Nate and Andy – I am in and these guys will go as long as they can without passing out. I continue to be humbled by the response of what started as a simple desire to feed some hungry people. This week we begin a sustainable project that will feed 100’s of people and hopefully offer homes, work skills and an introduction to Jesus to people that are working in the dump and trying to survive.

Sherry … I know you are proud of what Andy and the guys are doing. I heard through Marc that you might be in Hondo when we are in July.

      • Sherry Hubright says:

  • He was pretty tough to listen to as well.
  • As crazy as it might sound, Chris Collinsworth just might be worse to listen to than the song Christmas Shoes.
  • Please remember that some Christmas music is incredibly offensive to people with grandmothers who actually were run over by reindeer.
  • Unfortunately, not a great night for "bobcats." :)
