10 Signs You Might be a Lukewarm Christian

Katy is the book winner from last week’s giveaway. Congrats. I will be sticking a book in the mail to her later this week.

Lukewarmness is a battle I have to fight regularly. Being lukewarm as a Christian is NOT good. Lukewarmness is found somewhere between being hot (on fire for God as he demands) and being cold (having no desire to follow God). Revelation 3:15-16 has always been tough for me to comprehend, because Jesus is SO hard on the lukewarm. He actually says he’d rather you and I be “cold” rather than lukewarm, and that lukewarmness is disgusting enough to God to make him vomit.

I don’t know a better chapter on lukewarmness, than Chan’s in his book, “Crazy Love.” So with that in mind, here are 10 signs you might be a lukewarm Christian …

1. You think more about like on this earth (and how to be comfortable here) than you do about eternal life.

2. You give out of your leftovers rather than making it a priority.

3. You only seek God when you are in a bind.

4. You say you believe in God, but live as though he doesn’t exist.

5. You crave acceptance from people more than acceptance from God.

6. You rarely (or never) share your faith.

7. You say you believe in God, but you don’t strive to know Him.

8. You base your morality on comparing yourself with others, rather than on what God says.

9. Your life is really no different than others in the world.

10. You want to know Christ just enough to save you from hell, but not enough have to change your lifestyle.

#11 – You’re very hesitant to read an article entitled “10 Signs You Might Be a Lukewarm Christian”.

  3. Great post Trey. My thought is that it only takes one of these things on the list to indicate some lukewarm part of your life. You may be really great in one area, but you’re missing out on another.

  4. Evan Simmons says:

You’re comfortable with church … even when church does not reflect the vision of the kingdom.

  5. Lura says:

Knowing that I am unworthy causes uncertainty at times. This can be a good thing when it brings my attention back to where it needs to be but if I get distracted with worldly problems satan uses it to try to convince me not to attempt the impossible. Growing older has helped me to understand that God allows us to know that being unworthy is not the problem, giving up and giving in is.

  6. Yep, gotta love the conviction. I guess a lukewarm Christian wouldn’t really see themselves in this post.

  7. Marc Tindall says:

1.You think to pray as a last resort. “the only thing left to do now is pray”
    2. Your friends would be surprised to find out that you are a “Christian”
    3. Somebody quotes a scripture from the book of “Hezekiah” and you don’t know it is a joke.
    4. You think indwelling of the Holy Spirit calls for an exorcist.
    5. You think being a faithful follower means going to a service in a church building 2 or 3 times a week (and nothing else).
    6. The thought of your child becoming a missionary or minister makes you think you have failed as a parent.
    7. You spend more on your I Phone or Blackberry bill than you give to God.
    8. You believe that the story of the Rich Young Man really doesn’t apply to us.
    9. You have never shared the story of why Jesus is important in your life – and would have a difficult time with the answer if asked.
    10. The Bible that you take to “church” (for years) still has that like new look.

OH. *sigh* ……um. Time to repent.

  11. Saleena says:

One of my greatest struggles in my Christian walk was being addicted to others’ approval. This addiction was a direct result of being insecure about who I am or better yet who God says that I am. It all started in my childhood but I thank God for not only showing me that I was critically in bondage but also what His word said about me. During the process of deliverance, I have learned to accept that I am not perfect but made in God’s image and likeness. I am nothing without Him but everything in Him. He’s not surprised by my mistakes or shortcomings but He loves me just the way that I am; this doesn’t mean that He doesn’t expect me to change some things but that He knows that I am a work-in-progress!

  12. I’m a youth minister (and a parent.) So my list of “You Might Be Lukewarm as a Christian Parent, if…”
    – You ask your kids who you love the most and Jesus isn’t mentioned (stolen from a speaker at National Conference on Youth Ministries.)
    – You easily drop a couple hundred bucks for your kid’s band trip, but balk at $50 registration fee for a youth event at church that will increase their faith.
    – You would rather your kids be happy and popular than joyful and devoted to God.
    – Your kids whine, “Do we HAVE to go to church?!” and you realize they got that attitude from you.
    – You would be embarassed if someone asked your kids, “When did you you all read the Bible together last?” or “Does your family pray together a lot?”

  13. Randy Clay says:

You only pray in an emergency!

  14. Deanne says:

you eagerly sign up as a volunteer for your child’s softball team, but balk when asked to volunteer for an event at the church.
